Stirling to Host World Charolais Congress Gala Dinner

Stirling is set to welcome around 300 UK and international Charolais beef breeders for a special Gala Dinner this month, thanks to United Auctions and Stirling Council.

Scotland’s leading livestock auctioneers are a major sponsor of the 37th World Charolais Congress, which is being hosted in the UK from June 19th to 27th 2012 by the British Charolais Cattle Society to co-incide with its Golden Anniversary celebrations.

More than 200 international delegates will be attending the Congress from 12 major beef producing countries, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, USA and Zimbabwe. They will join scores of delegates from England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland to visit some of the UK’s most prominent Charolais herds and noted points of interest throughout the home nations, including the Royal Highland Show.

The Gala Dinner is the culmination of the UK tour and UA worked with Stirling Council to facilitate the evening event at Stirling Castle’s Great Hall on Saturday June 23rd.

This is the first time in 15 years that the formal meeting of global Charolais beef breeders has visited Scotland. Charolais is regarded as Europe’s number one beef breed, which reached a record-breaking 70,000gns (£73,500) at UA’s Bull Sales in October 2011.

Neil McLean, Joint Group MD of UA said: “Hosting this event in Stirling is a real benefit to the city as it represents an injection of around £1million to the local economy and cements Stirling as the heart of Scottish agricultural excellence.”

Over 70% of delegates’ time will be spent in Scotland, including visits to eight Charolais herds in Central and North East Scotland – some of the country’s most progressive and highest genetic merit pedigree herds.

Local Stirling farmer Andrew Hornall will host one such visit to his herd at Falleninch Farm near Stirling Castle on the afternoon of the Gala Dinner.

David Benson, Chief Executive of the British Charolais Cattle Society, said: “The Gala Dinner is the highlight of the World Charolais Congress and a major part of our golden anniversary celebrations. Charolais cattle were initially imported in the early 1960s to improve beef from the dairy sector before becoming an immediate success in the beef sector. Fifty years on and Charolais remains the leading continental beef terminal sire.”

CKD Galbraith launch Central Scotland ‘hub’

CKD Galbraith’s new Central Scotland rural ‘hub’ is to be officially opened by Stirling Council’s former Provost, Bailie Colin O’Brien tonight. (Tuesday, September 13th 2011).

The rural team at Scotland’s leading independent property consultants relocated to the Stirling Agricultural Centre from Glasgow in the summer to allow for significant expansion of its rural, agricultural and agency services.

Currently staffed by 22 personnel, the team provides comprehensive property services to the agricultural and rural sectors.

A new national Farm Sales office now operates from the Centre, which is also United Auctions’ (UA’s) headquarters, with whom the firm has a four-year alliance.

In addition to farm sales and purchases, the rural team specialises in the management and sale of estates and woodland, valuations and building surveying work.

Bailie Colin O’Brien will officially declare the new office open for business before an expected audience of 150 clients, staff, elected members and the local business community. He said: “On behalf of the Council, I welcome the opening of this new office with its diverse range of rural services that complements the role of the Centre and Stirling’s place at the heart of Scotland’s agricultural industry.”

James Galbraith, Chairman of CKD Galbraith, said: “We’re delighted to officially launch our new office in the Stirling Agricultural Centre. It’s a vibrant market place for the farming community, ideally located in the centre of Scotland, which affords us easy access and proximity to all our clients and our other offices across the country.

“We have watched as UA has developed its business at Stirling, making it the mart of choice for a very large number of livestock farmers. The high throughput of stock brings a large number of farmers to the Centre and provides us with great opportunity for vital face-to-face contact with clients and other contacts at the weekly sales.”

David Leggat MBE, Executive Chairman of UA, Scotland’s leading livestock auctioneers, said: “We’re pleased to welcome CKD Galbraith’s new rural office, which strengthens the proposition of our Agricultural Centre. Importantly, our customers now have instant access to the alliance, a benefit which has already seen a number of farms coming onto the market.”

UA wins Civic business award

Congratulations to United Auctions (UA) who were awarded for their ‘outstanding contribution to business and the community’at The Provost’s Civic Awards in Stirling.

Scotland’s leading livestock auctioneers, who operate eight centres across Scotland, were recognised for their significant investment in the local region in the past 24 months.

UA’s Executive team, comprising Executive Chairman David Leggat MBE and Joint Managing Directors Neil McLean and Robin Tough, received their presentation medal at a Gala Dinner in Stirling Castle’s Great Hall on Friday (28 October 2010).

The Awards are run by Stirling Council every two years to recognise individuals and organisations who have made significant contributions to the life of local communities or who have achieved national recognition in their field.

In July 2009, UA opened their new headquarters, the £15 million Stirling Agricultural Centre – a major investment for the City. Officially opened by First Minister Alex Salmond MSP, the event was attended by more than 5000 people and attracted much media attention.

The new Centre is the single location for the company’s amalgamated Perth and Stirling businesses. As part of the move, the world-famous Perth Bull Sales® now operate from Stirling whilst retaining their brand name.

The Bull Sales are a major agricultural and economic asset to Stirling. Unique to the UK, the national event is an integral part of the farming calendar. It attracts national and international audiences and boosts the local and national economy during off-peak seasons, raising the profile of the City.

David Leggat MBE, Executive Chairman of UA, said: “Since the MBO our focus has been on investment in our people and our premises. It’s a real honour to receive this award. We’re very proud of the company’s 150-year heritage and delighted to be recognised in this way.”
