Rural Cab Sec to host Q&A at Stirling Bull Sales

The Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs is set to take part in a public question and answer session with farmers on the first day of the Stirling Bull Sales (Monday 3^rd February).

Richard Lochhead MSP will be guest of honour at the national event, which runs from Monday 3^rd February to Tuesday 4^th February and continues on Monday 17^th and Tuesday 18^th February at Stirling Agricultural Centre.

As well as viewing the show and sale, Mr Lochhead will host a question and answer session on Monday afternoon, giving farmers attending the event the chance to ask him questions about key agricultural issues, including CAP reform.

The Spring Bull Sales will offer 1004 pedigree bulls and females on show and sale over the two-week event. Run under the auspices of the breed societies, the Stirling Bull Sales are hosted by United Auctions and sponsored by Bank of Scotland.

A new feature introduced by the Aberdeen Angus Cattle Society this February is the Parade of Pairs of Bulls on Sunday 2nd, which aims to show off the stock and forms part of the buyers’ research in choosing the right bull at the sale on the following Tuesday.

Stirlingshire visitors will also recognise well-known local farmer Fraser Sangster of Buchlyvie who is judging the Hereford bulls at the pre-sale show on Monday 3^rd February.

And the new, condensed format in week one this year will provide a wide range of bulls for sale on a single day, improving the choice for buyers and helping save time and expense for buyers and exhibitors alike.

David Leggat, executive chairman at UA, said: “The compact format in the first week will suit the buying public down to the ground. It’s not many agricultural shows that can offer access to 370 of the best pedigree bulls for sale in the country in one day.

“The Sales are a terrific forum for agriculture so we’re delighted to facilitate a Q&A with the minister for our customers and very pleased to welcome Provost of Stirling Mike Robbins as a special guest on Tuesday 4^th February.”

Stirling Bull Sales gears up for ‘Hammertime’

Stirling Agricultural Centre is to become a hive of activity with thousands of pedigree beef breeders and enthusiasts set to see 760 pedigree bulls and females go under the hammer at United Auctions’ Stirling Bull Sales this month.

Held under the auspices of the national breed societies, the Autumn Bull Sales take place from Monday 21^st to Wednesday 23^rd October 2013 and are supported by independent property consultancy CKD Galbraith.

David Leggat, Executive Chairman of UA, said: “This is an exciting set of sales with a good offering of 505 bulls of all breeds. In response to demand from commercial buyers, pedigree producers have included more information regarding estimates of genetic traits of beef production so that 99% of bulls have been supplied with EBVs. In addition, every bull entered has information about either its own or the herd health.”

One of the highlights of the sales is the dispersal of the renowned Aberdeen Angus Halbeath herd established in 1999 by Robin Orr of Halbeath Farm, Dunfermline, Fife, which has achieved top prices in the sale rings.

Interest in British Shorthorns continues to grow with a record entry of 126 females forward this autumn, which includes the dispersal of the highly successful Glengloy herd from David Macleod, Glengoy, Fort William.

Also featured is a dispersal sale of the autumn calving portion of the long-established Dunsyre herd of Shorthorns from Mr Carey Coombs, Weston, Dunsyre, Carnwath.

In a technological first for the marketplace, the Autumn sales will see the launch of leading edge, digital display systems used in the sale rings to live stream sale and sponsor information, videos and a ticker tape news feature.

Already used at Kings Cross Station, Ibrox Stadium and Glasgow’s subway, the two new 6m x 2m screens will replace 10-year-old monotone graphic display systems.

Visitors will also see that work has started on expanding the Stirling Agricultural Centre for three growing agri-businesses.

Two purpose-built premises, each extending to 6,372 sq ft, are being developed on the Centre’s front paddock for Agricar, a tractor dealership who are relocating from Doune, and existing tenant Emotion Energy who currently occupy Unit 2A-2B at the Centre. The renewables company requires larger premises for its expanding business and their vacated unit will create space for new company Clyde Vet Group to be part of the Centre’s thriving agri community.

Darling breeds of May come to Stirling for UA’s one-day Bull Sale

United Auctions’ (UA’s) May Multi-breed Show and Sale returns this year with a strong line-up of 212 pedigree bulls and females.

The annual event takes place on Monday 6^th May 2013 at the Stirling Agricultural Centre, the HQ of Scotland’s leading livestock auctioneers.

And its compact format, in which pedigree cattle are shown and sold in one day, has real appeal to customers at this busy time of year.

It is run in conjunction with a commercial beef breeding sale, which includes 500 store cattle and a show and sale of Simmental cross females.

The pedigree show will be judged by three young judges from the next generation of pedigree cattle breeders.

While Stuart Barclay from Aberdeen, John Barlow from Leyland and Michael Norman from Carlisle have experience at summer shows, this will be their first appearance at an official Bull Sale.

For the second year running, the event has been selected to stage a sale of Longhorns, one of the UK’s most ancient breeds.

It also welcomes a new sponsor – Hendricks Insurance, who relocated its headquarters to the Centre in January this year. The company, which specialises in farming and estate policies, will have a presence on the day with director Ritchie Sherret presenting a prize at the show.

David Leggat, Executive Chairman of UA, said: “It’s a real pleasure to see the younger generation of judges making their mark at an official bull sale and we’re delighted to host the Longhorns’ sale for the second, consecutive year.

“The compact structure of the event with the accompanying commercial sale makes for a busy day with something for everyone.”

Simmental UK breed record smashed at Stirling Bull Sales

The UK breed record for Simmentals was smashed to smithereens this afternoon (Monday 18th February) at the Stirling Bull Sales by a whopping 45,000gns (equivalent to £47,250) price tag.

The senior and overall champion bull Bel Dhu Capercaillie (lot 147) from consignor WG MacPherson of Blackford Farm, Croy, Invernessshire was sold to Simmental Judge Iain Green in partnership with Andrew Anderson of Smallburn Farms, Elgin by auctioneer and Executive Chairman David Leggat.

It took around three minutes for the UK record of 22,000gns (set three times previously for Omorga Samson, Dirnanean Typhoon and Dirnanean Bradley) to be eclipsed in a packed sale ring, which drew gasps and applause.

1000 bulls set for Stirling Bull Sales

With a total of 1169 pedigree bulls and females on the road to Stirling for the Spring Bull Sales next week, the event welcomes some bumper breed entries and the first-time auction of Japanese Wagyu embryos.

The action takes place at United Auctions’ (UA’s) Stirling Agricultural Centre across two weeks from Monday 4^th to Wednesday 6^th February and from Monday 18^th to Tuesday 19^th February 2013.

The Stirling Bull Sales, held under the auspices of the national breed societies and supported by the Bank of Scotland, has a new format. The native breeds plus Limousins will be exhibited in week one with the rest of the continental breeds featuring in week two.

David Leggat, Executive Chairman of UA, said: “The sale promises a fantastic show for quality with bulls to suit to every pocket. Virtually all the bulls have both EBV information and herd health status in the catalogues to help buyers with their choice.”

Included in the event are 180 Limousin bulls, making it the biggest entry of the breed in the history of the Sales.

At 93 entries, the Shorthorn bulls are at their largest numbers since the 1960s.

And after two decades, the Bull Sales will also see enough Herefords to enable show classes.

In a first of its kind for the event, a customer is offering for sale 18 pure Wagyu embryos from a local, recently established herd.

Husband and wife team Mohsin and Martine Al-Tajir run the Japanese breed, which produces the most expensive beef in the world, under their company Highland Wagyu based at Blackford Farms in Dunblane.

Mr Leggat continued: “We believe the sale of these Wagyu embryos is the first time that such genetic material will be offered in Scotland via auction and we’re pleased to support Highland Wagyu in this way.”

United Auctions introduces new Judge’s Medal by Iona Crawford at Stirling Bull Sales

United Auctions (UA) have commissioned one of Scotland’s most exciting artist designers to create an exclusive medal for Judges in honour of the first, official Stirling Bull Sales.

Iona Crawford, who is originally from Stirling and works internationally as an artist and fashion designer, was specially commissioned by Scotland’s leading livestock auctioneers to design the medal, which commemorates the Judges’ important role in the national event.

The Stirling Bull Sales will take place at UA’s Stirling Agricultural Centre from Monday October 22^nd to Wednesday October 24^th 2012 with 875 pedigree bulls and females on show and sale.

Iona Crawford grew up at Craigend Farm near Stirling, which is still worked by her parents Willie and Evelyn.

After graduating with a first class honours from Edinburgh College of Art she has gone on to establish an international reputation as a designer, working within both the fashion and luxury interiors industries. Drawing inspiration from the beauty and diversity of the Scottish countryside, Iona’s painterly practice is stimulated by her artistic impression of her surrounds.

In September of this year she spent time in New York, exhibiting during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, Home Fashion Market Week and the Hamptons Fashion Weekend. After a brief few days back in Glasgow, Iona flew out to Chicago where she was invited to represent Scotland as part of a cultural trade delegation during the Ryder Cup.

Moulded in antique gold each of the 60mm diametermedals depicts the head and shoulders of a champion bull – complete with a rosette – against a backdrop of Stirling’s iconic landscape, including the Wallace Monument, Stirling Castle, the Craigforth Crag and Dumyat leading down to the Rivers Teith and Forth, which converge near the Agricultural Centre.

The medals will be presented to each of the seven Judges in a handcrafted Bury Elm wood box lined with green tweed. Each Judge’s name will be engraved on the reverse of the medal alongside the month and date of the Sales.

Neil McLean, UA’s Group Joint Managing Director who led on the project, said: “The introduction of the Judge’s Medal is an important new feature for the Stirling Bull Sales and, as far as we’re aware, is the first of its kind. It is a mark of respect for the Judges and their considerable knowledge, experience and skill.

“It’s been a real pleasure working with Iona on this project. Her passion for what she does is infectious and we’re delighted with the design, which perfectly tells the story of the Stirling Bull Sales.”

Iona Crawford said: “Whilst work dictates that I often travel internationally to promote my brand, at heart I am a Stirling farmer’s daughter and enjoy returning regularly to help out at Craigend and to hear what’s new on the farm.

“I have developed a deep love and fondness for the agricultural way of life which will never leave me, so I was honoured and delighted to be invited to design these unique medals.”

Stirling Bull Sales’ highlights

The Autumn Sales sees the largest entry of Beef Shorthorn heifers forward to date at the Autumn event – 122 in total will go under the hammer on Monday October 22^nd.

On the same day, there will be a major reduction of the high-achieving Mosston Muir herd of pedigree Aberdeen Angus from Tom and Joyce Rennie of Forfar, which has won the Walker Shortbread Trophy seven times.

To mark the close of the Charolais Cattle Society’s Golden Anniversary year, Michel Baudot

President of Herd Book Charolais, will be welcomed from Magny-Cours in Central France to judge the Charolais entries on Tuesday October 23^rd. He will be the first Charolais Judge to receive the new Judge’s Medal.

In addition, two charity auctions of paintings will take place during the Sales with two paintings of Beef Shorthorn cattle raising funds for the Strathcarron Hospice while the RSABI will be supported by the auction of two further paintings of bulls and a part-set of Aberdeen Angus Herd Books.

The agricultural charity will also have a trade stand at the Sales to raise funds for their support services.

David Leggat, UA’s Executive Chairman, said: “We’re delighted with the number and quality of entries on show and sale for the Stirling Bull Sales.

“Working with the breed societies, we strive to improve animal health and we’re proud that virtually all cattle entered have a health status declaration detailed in the catalogues.”

UA Officially Renames Event as Stirling Bull Sales

United Auctions (UA) are to rebrand the Perth Bull Sales as the Stirling Bull Sales.

Scotland’s leading livestock auctioneers and procurement specialists have taken the decision to update the Bull Sales’ brand to reflect its Stirling location.

The world-famous event, established in Perth in 1865, takes place annually in February, May and October and attracts more than 22,000 UK and international visitors each year.

The Sales were transferred to Stirling in 2009 as part of the company’s amalgamation of its Perth and Stirling businesses into a single centre of operation at the new Stirling Agricultural Centre.

While it made sense to retain the internationally recognised brand at that time, it has become clear that the name creates misunderstanding regarding where the Sales actually take place as well as ambiguity in how to refer to them.

David Leggat, Executive Chairman of UA, said: “We are incredibly proud of the Perth element of the Bull Sales’ heritage, which is held dear to many people, including myself. However, the event has been known anecdotally as the Stirling Sales since they moved here nearly three years ago and we feel the time is right to officially adapt the name for clarity of location.”

Stirling Labour MP, Anne McGuire said: “I am delighted that UA have decided to rebrand the Bull Sales as the Stirling Sales. The success of the new Auction Mart has no doubt played a part in this decision. UA made a strong commitment to Stirling with the massive investment in the Mart, and as a strong supporter of the development since the beginning; I wish the newly renamed Stirling Bull Sales in October every success, which will attract buyers and sellers from all parts of the UK and beyond.”

Bruce Crawford, SNP MSP for Stirling said: “Changing the name to the Stirling Bull Sales makes sense and should help avoid confusion. I also feel that this change of name reflects the fact that the Bull Sales have been a very welcome addition to the Stirling area in recent years that have made this area at the very heart of Scotland’s agricultural industry.

“After great success in recent years, I am sure the Stirling Bull Sales will go from strength to strength in the years to come.”

Stirling Council’s Provost Mike Robbins said: ‘It’s terrific to see the renaming of the Bull Sales to reflect their new home here in Scotland’s heart. The Sales are a major event in the agricultural calendar and bring thousands of visitors to our area.’

The format and all other aspects of the Sales will remain the same.

The new brand comes into immediate effect with the first, official Stirling Bull Sales being the Autumn Sales held from October 22nd to 24th 2012.
