United Auctions Scotland's leading livestock auctioneers

Largest line-up of Aberdeen-Angus at Autumn Bull Sales

United Auctions is set to host the largest number of pedigree Aberdeen-Angus bulls and females forward at the Stirling Bull Sales in October.

Scotland’s leading livestock auctioneers will welcome the bumper entry of Aberdeen-Angus bulls (98) and females (174) to Stirling Agricultural Centre where 771 pedigree bulls and females across eight breeds – including Beef Shorthorn, Limousin, Simmental, Charolais, Salers, British Blonde and Lincoln Red cattle – will be on show and sale from Sunday 21 October to Tuesday 23 October 2018.

The Stirling Bull Sales are supported by all-year sponsor Galbraith, the leading independent property consultancy.

The busy three-day programme begins on Sunday 21 October with the judging of Aberdeen-Angus in the morning and followed by Beef Shorthorn cattle and a parade of Salers, British Blue and Lincoln Red bulls in the afternoon. Their sales will be held on Monday 22 October.

The pre-sale show of Charolais bulls will be held on Monday morning followed by Simmental cattle in the afternoon with the sales of both breeds taking place the following day, on Tuesday 23 October.

Commenting on the significant increase of Aberdeen-Angus breed entries at the Autumn Bull Sales since the world-famous event relocated to Stirling Agricultural Centre, John Roberts, United Auctions’ Group Sales Director, said:

“The number of Aberdeen-Angus bulls forward this October is a testament to the breed gaining in popularity with demand for grass-fed beef continuing to grow as well as the increase in values that the Angus premium brings.”

“It’s also fantastic to see so many Aberdeen-Angus females being sold through the market system at Stirling, demonstrating the strength and importance of the sale ring.”

In line with this, a feature in the Autumn Bull Sales’ programme will be three dispersals of highly respected herds of Aberdeen-Angus and Simmental pedigree cattle.

Two dispersal sales of Aberdeen-Angus cattle will be held on Monday afternoon.

First in the ring will be the Moncur Aberdeen-Angus herd with 50 lots from GC Taylor (Farms) Ltd. This Perthshire-based herd, founded in 1992 by the late Mark Taylor, has a good history of selling at both Stirling and Perth and has seen success in both the sale and show ring as well as significant export trade with females and bulls.

Rounding up the Aberdeen-Angus sale will be the dispersal of the Ellon-based Schivas herd from Schivas Estates. With 101 lots, the sale is one of the largest staged by United Auctions at the Stirling Bull Sales in recent years and has been run on a commercial basis since it was established in 2001.

The Simmental female sale on Tuesday morning includes the dispersal of the renowned Mendick herd, totalling 38 lots. This long-established herd is run by The Dykes family at South Slipperfield, West Linton who featured in the popular BBC One series ‘Lambing Live’ in 2014.

David Brown, Sales Director at United Auctions will be wielding the hammer for the dispersals of the Moncur Aberdeen-Angus and Mendick Simmental herds. He said: The dispersal sales of pedigree cattle represent a great chance for buyers to source top-class Aberdeen Angus and Simmental genetics.”

Darling breeds of May come to Stirling for UA’s one-day Bull Sale

United Auctions’ (UA’s) May Multi-breed Show and Sale returns this year with a strong line-up of 212 pedigree bulls and females.

The annual event takes place on Monday 6th May 2013 at the Stirling Agricultural Centre, the HQ of Scotland’s leading livestock auctioneers.

And its compact format, in which pedigree cattle are shown and sold in one day, has real appeal to customers at this busy time of year.

It is run in conjunction with a commercial beef breeding sale, which includes 500 store cattle and a show and sale of Simmental cross females.

The pedigree show will be judged by three young judges from the next generation of pedigree cattle breeders.

While Stuart Barclay from Aberdeen, John Barlow from Leyland and Michael Norman from Carlisle have experience at summer shows, this will be their first appearance at an official Bull Sale.

For the second year running, the event has been selected to stage a sale of Longhorns, one of the UK’s most ancient breeds.

It also welcomes a new sponsor – Hendricks Insurance, who relocated its headquarters to the Centre in January this year. The company, which specialises in farming and estate policies, will have a presence on the day with director Ritchie Sherret presenting a prize at the show.

David Leggat, Executive Chairman of UA, said: “It’s a real pleasure to see the younger generation of judges making their mark at an official bull sale and we’re delighted to host the Longhorns’ sale for the second, consecutive year.

“The compact structure of the event with the accompanying commercial sale makes for a busy day with something for everyone.”

The Charolais, Simmental, Limousin, Aberdeen Angus, Beef Shorthorn and Longhorn breeds are all sold under the auspices of their respective breed societies.

Full catalogue details for the Sales are available on the pedigree page of UA’s website along with access to the sale ring’s live webcam. And UA’s Facebook page will share as-it-happens news and updates. Opportunities for photographs are available from Sunday 5th May.

Simmental UK breed record smashed at Stirling Bull Sales

The UK breed record for Simmentals was smashed to smithereens this afternoon (Monday 18th February) at the Stirling Bull Sales by a whopping 45,000gns (equivalent to £47,250) price tag.

The senior and overall champion bull Bel Dhu Capercaillie (lot 147) from consignor WG MacPherson of Blackford Farm, Croy, Invernessshire was sold to Simmental Judge Iain Green in partnership with Andrew Anderson of Smallburn Farms, Elgin by auctioneer and Executive Chairman David Leggat.

It took around three minutes for the UK record of 22,000gns (set three times previously for Omorga Samson, Dirnanean Typhoon and Dirnanean Bradley) to be eclipsed in a packed sale ring, which drew gasps and applause.

Bumper entry at Autumn Bull Sales

One year after the move to Stirling, United Auctions’ (UA’s) world-famous Perth Bull Sales® attract a ten per cent boost in entries on last year.

The leading livestock auctioneers will also see the largest consignment of bulls and females from Northern Ireland in a decade.

The Autumn Bull Sales start next week, from Monday 18th October to Wednesday 20th October 2010, at Stirling Agricultural Centre.

880 pedigree cattle from Scotland, England and Wales – including 80 bulls and females from Northern Ireland – are coming to UA’s Stirling-based headquarters for the October Sales.

The Autumn Bull Sales are held under the auspices of the national breed societies and are sponsored by CKD Galbraith.

For the second year, the Sales will be broadcast live over the Internet via audio webcam for those who can’t make the event in person. The webcast displays all the animal’s information on screen and can be accessed via a link on the home page of the website www.uagroup.co.uk

David Leggat, Executive Chairman of UA, said: “It’s exciting to see the significant increase in numbers and the quality of bull and female entries forward this year.

“For the past 15 years we’ve been encouraging vendors to demonstrate the health status of their herds so we’re pleased that this year we have the highest ever percentage of cattle health declarations.

“Buyers need only look at the number of impressive EBVs (Estimated Breeding Values) supplied in the catalogues to be confident of a first-class selection at this year’s Sales.

“We’re delighted that CKD Galbraith return as our main sponsor for the Autumn Bull Sales and are grateful for their support.”

Full catalogue details for the Sales are available on the pedigree page of UA’s website.

Opportunities for photographs will be available from Sunday 17th October onwards.
