Next generation take the hammer for May Bull Sales

283 pedigree bulls and females on show and sale

United Auctions is putting an experienced team of rising star auctioneers at the helm of the Stirling Bull Sales next month.

In a nod to 2018 being the Year of Young People, a trio of next generation auctioneers – Ross Fotheringham (27), Raymond Kennedy (27) and Murray Rainnie (30) – will between them lead the sales of 283 pedigree bulls and females at the May event.

The Stirling Bull Sales take place at Stirling Agricultural Centre from Sunday 6 May to Monday 7 May 2018.

United Auctions’ commitment to succession planning and advancing people from within the Company is shared by its strategic partner Galbraith, the leading independent property consultancy. Galbraith became the sole, all-year sponsor of the Stirling Bull Sales this year.

At the two-day May event, no less than eight pedigree breeds will be on show and sale.

Judging will take place on Sunday 6 May for Charolais, Simmental and Aberdeen-Angus and on the morning of Monday 7 May for Limousin, Beef Shorthorn, Salers, Highland and Hereford breeds. All sales will be held on the Monday.

This year sees a record entry of Simmental bulls forward, reflecting the growing popularity of the breed in the sale ring.

John Roberts, United Auctions’ Group Sales Director, said: “It’s great to see another breed record entry for Simmentals and we’re delighted to have the support of so many pedigree breeders who recognise the value of being part of the May Bull Sales.

“Handing the gavel for this set of sales to our next generation of leaders is a huge tribute. They may be young in years but they have solid experience of both pedigree and commercial sales under their belts, and it shows just how much confidence we have in them by letting them take the mantle of such an important event.”

“Top bulls” line up for Stirling Bull Sales

Galbraith as new sole sponsor of national event

United Auctions are set to welcome a record number of Salers forward, the first official sale of Lincoln Reds, a new sole sponsor and much more when the Stirling Bull Sales kick off next month.

Scotland’s leading livestock auctioneers will host no less than 962 pedigree bulls and females on show and sale at the February Bull Sales. The two-week event takes place at Stirling Agricultural Centre from Sunday 4 February to Monday 5 February and continues from Sunday 18 February to Tuesday 20 February 2018 at United Auctions’ headquarters, Stirling Agricultural Centre.

Importantly, February 2018 marks the start of sole, all-year sponsorship by Galbraith of the Stirling Bull Sales which take place in February, May and October annually.

The leading independent property consultancy has a long, strategic partnership with United Auctions, which continues to go from strength to strength. The national sales centre of Galbraith is based at the Agricultural Centre in the City of Stirling and together with United Auctions, the two Stirling businesses employ more than 350 people.

George Purves, Managing Director of United Auctions said: “The Stirling Bull Sales are well recognised as one of the most important dates in the farming calendar. Three times a year the City enjoys an out-of-season influx of visitors with demand in hotels, bars, restaurants and conference facilities providing a welcome local economic boost.

“This sponsorship is testament to our commitment as rural specialists and allows us to gain greater brand exposure amongst our target audience. We very much look forward to strengthening our successful relationship with United Auctions throughout the year.”

All about the pedigree…

Popular Sunday judging continues at the Stirling Bull Sales with the main sales held on the Monday of week one and the Monday and Tuesday of week two.

This year, the Bull Sales hosts a total of ten breeds, including the first official sale of pedigree Lincoln Red bulls taking place on the afternoon of Monday 5 February following a parade on Sunday 4 February in the exhibition hall.

A highlight of week one will be the chance for breeders and commercial buyers to source great genetics from the part dispersal of the Perthshire-based Coldrochie Beef Shorthorn herd from Douglas McMillan who is retiring. Coldrochie stock has achieved considerable success at both national and local shows. The autumn calving portion together with a crop of young bulls, comprising 27 lots, will be sold on Monday 5 February while the spring calving portion will be dispersed in May.

The herd has an excellent health and production record and bulls and draft females have met a strong demand at the Stirling sales.

An all-time record of pedigree Salers bulls (44) and females (25) forward in week two can be seen at the pre-sale show on Sunday 18 February and the sale on Monday 19 February.

Meanwhile a major reduction of the Woodhall herd, comprising 55 lots, from the late Hector Macaskill will be held on the morning of Monday 19 February. Established in 1976, this herd of Simmentals has tremendous breeding with a consistent source of top class pedigree and commercial stud bulls.

John Roberts, United Auctions’ Group Sales Director, said: “The top bulls are coming to be sold in Stirling at the February Bull Sales – from Shetland to Somerset and Aberdeen to Tiree and Northern Ireland – offering a leading line up in both number and quality bloodlines. It’s also fantastic to see the growth in the Salers breed and we’re delighted to welcome the first foundation sale of Lincoln Reds.”

Full catalogue details for the Sales will be also available on the Stirling Bull Sales’ page of United Auctions’ websitealong with access to the sale ring’s live webcam. Opportunities for photographs are available from the Saturday of each week.

Super-size entry at Autumn Bull Sales

856 Pedigree bulls and females on show and sale

United Auctions is set to host a super-sized Autumn Bull Sales as they welcome 856 pedigree beef bulls and females on show and sale at Stirling Agricultural Centre.

This year Scotland’s leading livestock auctioneers are holding the October Bull Sales over four days – from Sunday 16th to Wednesday 19th October 2016 – to accommodate a particularly busy programme.

Sunday judging of the Aberdeen-Angus and Beef Shorthorn breeds, introduced last year, will continue this year with sales taking place the following day on Monday, 17th October.

The Autumn Bull Sales are sponsored by independent property consultancy CKD Galbraith.

A highlight at this year’s Sales will be four prestigious dispersals of pedigree Aberdeen-Angus, Charolais and Simmental females.

One of the most significant Aberdeen-Angus sales staged in the recent history of the breed will take place on Monday afternoon as the sale of the Spring calving portion of the renowned Blelack herd from Graeme and Neil Massie goes under the hammer. The Blelack herd has produced no less than 13 champions at the Bull Sales – a record unsurpassed by any herd. The attractive catalogue of cattle features 75 lots of cows with calves at foot. Many of these cows have already produced bulls, which have featured at the Bull Sales.

The afternoon of Tuesday 18th October sees the dispersal of the Massie family’s Blelack pedigree Charolais with 90 lots forward, including many cows with Spring-born calves at foot. The herd has consistently achieved top prices and averages at the Bull Sales.

This will be followed by the dispersal of the Angus-based Guthrie herd from the Murray family with 17 lots of Charolais females on offer.

Meanwhile, the dispersal of the entire Spring calving portion of the Woodhall herd, comprising 55 lots, from Hector Macaskill will be held on Tuesday morning. This herd of Simmentals was established in 1976 and has been a consistent source of top class pedigree and commercial stud bulls.

David Brown, Sales Director and Auctioneer at UA, who will be in the rostrum for all four dispersals said: “These sales are a unique opportunity for buyers to source highly productive and successful bloodlines. The majority of the lots are cows sold with really promising calves at foot with most of the cows having been re-served with selected bulls. This is a rare set of sales offering an excellent choice for buyers.”

John Roberts, Sales Director and Auctioneer at UA said: “With 450 beef bulls forward from eight different breeds, including the largest entry of Charolais bulls for a number of years, the quality of pedigree livestock on offer at the October sales is just tremendous.”

In addition, the October Bull Sales will include a charity auction on Sunday 16th October at 5pm for the Doreen Cormack Stem Cell Fund. This special auction will help raise funds towards Doreen’s Stem Cell treatment for MS at a specialist clinic in Mexico next February.

More than 70 lots, including livestock, embryos, semen, special prizes and sporting experiences, have been kindly donated to help the Angus breeder meet her fundraising target of £50,000. Two of the UK’s leading herds have been generous in offering livestock lots. The opening lot is from the Davidson family who donated the pick of their Skaill herd. Doreen and Alistair recently travelled to Orkney and selected three-year-old cow Skaill Tibbie N812 who comes with her promising second calf at foot, Skaill Tibbie S545.

The second lot is a choice of an in-calf heifer from the entire Wedderlie herd run by the Tilson family in the Borders. The 200-cow Wedderlie herd celebrated its centenary in 2014 and Wedderlie genetics have been used in the foundation of eminent herds over the years.

A dedicated catalogue is available on the UA website and telephone bids are accepted on the day.

Full catalogue details for the Sales will be also available on the Stirling Bull Sales’ page of UA’s website along with access to the sale ring’s live webcam. Opportunities for photographs are available from Sunday.
