All information sourced and paraphrased from presenters Gary Ennis, MD at NSDesign Ltd (www.nsdesign.co.uk) and David Hoey, Partner at bto solicitors (www.bto.co.uk).

1. Facebook is the 4th most popular website in the world, with 400 million users

2. 40% of FB users are aged 18-24 years and a further 40% are aged 25-54 years

3. Twitter has 105 million regular users and adds 300,000 users every day

4. Twitter users conduct 19 billion searches a month, effectively making it a search engine, second only to Google

5. 75% Twitter users access the site via third party devices, e.g. mobiles

6. 85% Twitter users think businesses should interact with customers on social media

7. Social networking is about creating a business community that adds value. It isn’t a quick fix but it can help improve customer service, word of mouth, and repeat business if done right

8. Have a social media strategy, clearly defining your objectives, message, audience – and review it regularly

9. Remember: everything that goes on social media sites is public space, so don’t say anything you wouldn’t say to a journalist

10. Ensure you have a comprehensive – and easily accessible – policy on internet use that clearly details how, when and where employees can use social networking sites – and what happens when they breach the policy.

Note: Statistics change daily.
